Rural Plumber in Deception Bay
A rural plumber in Deception Bay works a different job list. Tanks instead of a mains-only feed, pumps where suburbia leans on street pressure, long water lines and gas bottles on the bigger blocks.

Tank Water, Mains Water or Both
Your block runs on town water, tank water, or both, and the plumbing follows the answer. Tank water draws its pressure from a pump or from the height of the tank, not from the street main.
The QBCC guide is blunt about drinking. Rainwater should only go in the glass when no town supply serves the block, because reticulated water is the safest and most dependable at the tap.
Unitywater adds the owner's side: dirt and microorganisms can get into a private tank, so a household on tank water manages both the safety and the availability of what comes out the spout. Three parts of the setup matter most:
The tank
siting, first flush and mosquito screens all change how the water arrives, and our rainwater tank plumbing page covers what goes into one.
The pump
a pressure pump adds pressure at the house end, so taps and appliances get usable flow; see our tank pumps page.
The filter
swapping a domestic water filter cartridge is unregulated work anyone may do, though the finished result still has to meet the standards.

Who Owns the Pipe From Meter to House
You do: every pipe from the meter to the fixtures in your house is the owner's to maintain, so on a large block the whole run is yours. Unitywater's side stops at the meter.
Leaks on private property, including concealed leaks, sit with the owner too. That makes a long rural run worth walking once a year, because a slow seep at the far end of the block shows on a bill long before it shows on the ground.
Replacing that supply pipe in an existing building is notifiable work. A licensed plumber does the job, lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing, and hands you a copy.
The digging around it is different. Excavating or backfilling a trench is unregulated work, so you or a contractor can open and close the ground while the licensed plumber handles the pipe itself.

Mains Pressure on Rural Blocks
Friction is the usual culprit: a longer or narrower pipe loses more pressure along its length. Taps at the house end of a long run get less than the ones near the meter.
A wider pipe loses less over the same distance. That trade, between pipe size and pressure at the spout, is what a plumber works through with you before anything goes in the ground.
A pressure pump fixes the shortfall at the house end. It lifts the pressure so showers, washing machines and garden taps all get usable flow, whatever the meter is delivering.

Storing and Refilling LPG Cylinders
Use and store LPG cylinders in a well-ventilated area away from excess heat and ignition sources, and keep spares in a designated secure location. Keep the valve sealed when a cylinder is not in use, even an empty one.
Refills have a date attached. A portable cylinder, the barbecue and camping type, usually holds 9 kg. Refills need a current ten-year test stamp, and filling stations check the date on every cylinder they fill.
The gas itself behaves in a way worth knowing. LPG is heavier than air, so a leak can pool in low areas and drains rather than drifting away.
Only a licensed gasfitter does gas work in Queensland, from installing a system to altering, repairing, servicing or certifying one. Our gas cooktop installation page covers the appliance end of that.
Two safety notes finish the picture. Check cylinders and appliances for a rotten-egg smell, and never repair or remove a cylinder valve yourself.

Long Runs on Wet Coastal Ground
The bigger the block, the more the ground underneath matters, and the coastal flats here stay wet. When the ground stays saturated, trench walls slump and the bedding under a pipe shifts, so a long-run repair takes longer than the same job on higher ground.
The housing adds its own layer. Plenty of the single-storey brick and fibro homes from the seventies and eighties still run a tank that should have retired years ago, and the salty bayside air is hard on anything left exposed.
At the last census, 19,573 people lived across 19.44 square kilometres here, with plenty of low-density and semi-rural lots among the 7,120 dwellings. Big blocks with old supply lines are part of that picture, and we plan for them.

Acreage Plumbing Questions Answered
Call (07) 3524 7137Who maintains the long water pipe from the meter to my house?
You do. Unitywater looks after the public mains and sewer, and every pipe and fitting from the meter onto your property is yours to maintain, so a big block means a long private run.
Can I drink tank water at my Deception Bay property?
No, not while town water reaches the block. The QBCC guide allows rainwater for drinking, washing and cooking only where a reticulated supply is unavailable, since town water is the safest and most reliable option. On a Unitywater block, the tank's safety and availability are yours to manage.
Who can replace the water line from the meter to the house?
A licensed plumber. Replacing supply piping to an existing house is notifiable work, so the plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC within ten business days of finishing, and you get a copy. Digging and backfilling the trench is unregulated work anyone may do.
Why was my gas bottle refused for refilling?
The test stamp has run out. A portable LPG cylinder, the barbecue and camping type, needs a current ten-year test stamp before a filling station can refill it, and stations check the date on every cylinder.
Where should I keep spare gas bottles on my property?
Somewhere airy and secure. Keep cylinders in a ventilated spot clear of heat and ignition sources, with spares in a set-aside, locked place. LPG is heavier than air, so a leak can pool in low areas and drains.
